Chapter 14

~Max~

After I boarded the private jet Craig chartered for me, I dozed off for a long nap. My lack of sleep during the past 10 days finally caught up with me. When I woke up, I immediately glanced at my watch to see what time it was. I hated the way I left Emilia. I wanted to explain my circumstances to her as soon as I could. I didn’t want her to think I pulled a one-night stand on her, especially after the discussion we had had about it. Unfortunately, the girl never carried her phone on her. It was for emergencies only. “Why pay for anything you can avoid?” she told me just like when she had discouraged me from opening the expensive wine at the resort. I respect a woman who is smart with her money and has strong convictions about things that matter most in life. That’s why I am utterly attracted to her. Thankfully, I added Duc’s number to my contact list.

“Neena, I’d like a cup of coffee with a little cream and sugar,” I called out to the flight attendant, a tall, striking Asian woman with dark, voluminous hair and a cajoling smile. Unaware of Emilia being the focus of my every thought, Craig probably put in a special request for her. In the past, he and I never traveled anywhere far without a sexy companion, a good bottle of liquor, and plenty of beer.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Reid. Would you like some brunch with that?” she offered as she leaned in close to my nose so I could inhale what she thought was an enticing fragrance. Her eyes, mocha and fringed with sweeping lashes, invited me while she bared a flirty grin that I dismissed.

How thoughtful of you, Craig, to hire her for me. Sadly, she’s no Emilia.

“Sure,” I replied concisely and then pulled out my phone to call Duc as she sidled backward.

“Hello, Max,” Duc answered after the second ring. “Good to hear from you,” he said excitedly. “I sad I no get to say good-bye or thank you for everything you did for orphanage,” he regretted in one big breathy gulp.

“Slow down, Duc,” I encouraged. “No need to thank me and besides, I’ll be back,” I assured him. “An emergency came up that I have to handle myself or else I wouldn’t have left like this. I’m sorry I couldn’t say goodbye properly to you and the others.”

“I understand. I hope to see you soon,” he replied in a cheery voice. I could picture his kind, smiling face relaxing after he heard my explanation.

“Duc, I need a favor from you.”

“Yes, anything. What you want me do for you?”

“Can you give your phone to Emilia so I can talk to her?”

“Yes, of course. She be very happy to hear your voice. All morning she very quiet and sad without you,” he revealed frankly. Shit. I knew that would happen. Emilia probably thought I used and deserted her.

“Did she tell you anything?” I pried.

“No.
